Remember moving into the dorm as a freshman? Moving into the Javits Center Monday was like that, except for the New York traffic (I need a video game where I can blow up NY cabs and buses), the blitz of construction for Expo booths that will be torn down just three days from now, and a bit of the discomfit David felt while preparing for his showdown with Goliath.
You may remember that basketball great Wilt Chamberlain once complained that no one ever rooted for Goliath. Wilt, who stood 7-1, didn’t try to write a book until he had a lot of, ahem, fame under his belt. It would have been a different story had he shown up one year at the Book Expo as an unknown author amid a sea of famous writers and publishers.
But no complaints here. This is fun; literary energy is flowing like adrenaline in the fourth quarter of a tight game. As at the dorm freshman year, I met the neighbors, set up my space, and scoped out the best – or at least the closest – places to eat. I did not sleep there, but will be back before breakfast on Tuesday, side by side with Bella and a small team that will make it well worth the while of anyone who ventures by Booth 4780.
